The title of this article may sound like a statement of the obvious, but some websites would have you believe that they have the only cure for hemorrhoids!  Well let me assure you that there are number hemorrhoids treatments that work.  If you are suffering with hemorrhoids here are some treatments that should bring very quick relief:

Hemorrhoids Treatments 1 – Apply Witch Hazel. You can buy witch hazel solution easily and cheaply from a pharmacist or health food shop for a few dollars.  Witch Hazel is rich in tannins, and according to my research, it’s these tannins that give the plant its astringent properties.  Astringents have the ability to dry, tighten and harden tissues. When you apply the witch hazel it will temporarily tighten and soothe painful hemorrhoids.  Witch hazel also contains procyanadins, resin, and flavonoids, and these add to its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties.  To treat your hemorrhoids, soak a cloth or ball of cotton wool soaked in a witch hazel solution and apply directly to your anus and hemorrhoids.  The witch hazel will cause the blood vessels to contract, helping to reduce the swelling and inflammation, it should also stop any bleeding.  For even better results, put the bottle of witch hazel solution into a bowl of crushed ice before applying it – a cold solution of witch hazel will bring rapid relief.

Hemorrhoids Treatments 2 – Take Regular Sitz Baths. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids, a warm bath can be an effective hemorrhoids treatment that reduces the pain and irritation. It is not necessary to fill the bath, just 3 to 4 inches should be sufficient. The water needs to be warm, and you should bring your knees up to get maximum benefit.  Sit in the bath for approx. 20 minutes and take up to 3 baths a day.

Sitz Bath for Hemorrhoids Treatment

As well as using a standard bath, you can buy plastic sitz baths that are placed over a toilet.  Some of these plastic sitz baths come with the ability to continuously add warm water to the bath so it doesn’t get cold, with the overflow going into the toilet.  You can buy a sitz bath at most drugstores and these should cost you around $8 – $15.  Adding salt or baking soda can improve the effectiveness of the bath.

Hemorrhoids Treatments 3 – Use Hemorrhoid Wipes Not Toilet Paper. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids toilet paper can feel like sandpaper! It is abrasive and painful to use, and will irritate your hemorrhoids. Use moist hemorrhoid wipes or moist medicated wipes instead.  If you use a medicated wipe, make sure they don’t contain any alcohol or perfumes.

How to Stop Hemorrhoids Occurring

If you are fortunate enough not to be suffering from hemorrhoids, here are a couple things you can do to actively prevent them occurring:

  • Don’t strain when going to the bathroom.  Straining when trying to go to the bathroom is one of the causes of hemorrhoids.  If you feel constipated and a need to push, drink more fluids, take a fiber supplement or use a stool softener to avoid having to strain.
  • When you need to go – go!  Don’t try to hold it. When you feel the need to go to the toilet, go as soon as possible.  Now I must confess that when I first heard this I didn’t find it easy to put into practice, especially if out shopping or at a friend’s house.  Like many people I don’t like to go to the bathroom in public restrooms, or on an airplane, but I realised that holding on made the stool harder and more painful to pass.  If like me you really find it hard to use public restrooms because of the usual lack of cleanliness, always carry some disinfectant wipes with you for cleaning the toilet seat.  Now when I need to go when out shopping,  I find the nearest restroom and go (after a quick check that I have a packet of wipes in my handbag!).

In addition to the hemorrhoids treatments described above, I can warmly recommend the Hemorrhoid No More treatment that has helped me so much.
